Parliament, Sunday, 11 September 2022 - The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Sahlulele Luzipo, is saddened to learn from media reports about the untimely deaths of at least three people as a result of a mine dam burst in Jagersfontein, in Free State.

According to media reports, at least six people were rushed to the nearest hospital after sustaining injuries and houses next to the dam have been damaged.

Mr Luzipo has expressed his deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wished those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery. He understands that inspectors from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy have visited the mine in order to establish facts around the incident.

“We are going to consult with the Portfolio Committee on Water Affairs and Sanitation with a view to conduct an urgent joint oversight visit to the affected area because we appreciate that underground, surface and dam water resources fall under their purview,” said Mr Luzipo.

Mr Luzipo said: “We reiterate our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and friends and assuring them about our support to them during this very difficult time. May the souls of the deceased rest in eternal peace.”
