Parliament, Sunday, 29 March 2020 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, commends President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Inter-Ministerial Committee’s leadership for the way in which South African citizens were repatriated from Wuhan, China, three weeks ago.
Today, President Ramaphosa bid farewell to these citizens from their 14-day quarantine. Those quarantined including a task team from the South African National Defence Force, South African Airways pilots and crew, and doctors from the Department of Health.
Following their repatriation, all of them were placed in quarantine. Today they were released to their families, after a final test by the Department of Health, in which all of them tested negative for the Covid-19 virus.
Dr Dhlomo appreciated the efforts of the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, and the entire health department. “We thank our citizens who have been repatriated from Wuhan, because their compliance with the department’s protocols removed any element of panic and anxiety among South African citizens.”
“We also thank the government of Limpopo and the citizens in the province, more so the staff members of the Ranch Hotel, who subjected themselves to be part of the quarantine, for their understanding under these difficult times,” said Dr Dhlomo.
